Brief Description:

Alicia Kaplow was the co-chairman of this chapter. Acting in that capacity, Kaplow raised money for volunteers in Mississippi, spread information about the programs locally, and encouraged sympathizers to contact the federal authorities and request protection for civil rights workers. This Friends of SNCC chapter initiated an “adoption program” where local donors could adopt a Freedom Summer volunteer. They donor would send money to the volunteer, who would send letters to keep the donor informed about their work and progress in Mississippi. Below, the letter from JoAnn Ooiman to Mr. Ryshpan is one document from that program. This chapter also published their own Newsletter: Freedom Now.
